How to Apply for an EORI Number for Amazon FBA

As an experienced Amazon seller and mentor, I can’t stress enough the importance of having an EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) number if you plan to import goods into the European Union for your FBA business. This unique number is required by customs authorities to monitor and track shipments crossing international borders into the EU. Without it, you won’t be able to get your products through customs clearance properly.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the process of obtaining an EORI number specifically for Germany using the official customs website. While the steps may vary slightly for other EU countries, the core requirements remain the same. Let’s start with understanding what an EORI number is and why you need it.

What is an EORI Number?

An EORI number is a unique identifier that businesses and individuals engaged in importing goods into the EU must have. It allows customs officials across the EU to identify you as the importer and process your shipments accordingly. Think of it as a special code or license that grants you permission to bring products into the EU market.

Who Needs an EORI Number?

If you are an Amazon FBA seller importing products from outside the EU to sell on the platform, you are considered an “economic operator” in this context. As such, having an EORI number is a must to ensure your goods clear customs without issues. It’s a legal requirement that cannot be overlooked.

Failing to obtain an EORI number means your inbound shipments may face delays, additional fees, or even seizure by customs officials. No seller wants that kind of headache, especially when the application process is relatively straightforward.

How to Get an EORI Number

The first step is to visit the German customs website and look for application form 0878. You can access the online form directly here.

This is the online form you’ll need to fill out to register for an EORI number. Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of the process:

  1. Fill in Personal/Business Details

Start by entering your name, the date you started your business, the legal form (e.g., sole proprietorship), full address, email, and phone number.

  1. Fill in Tax Office Information

Next, provide the name of your local tax office (Finanzamt) and their federal tax office number. You can find this number by searching this database.

  1. VAT Identification Number

Enter your VAT identification number, which typically starts with “DE” followed by 9 digits for German businesses.

  1. Fill in Main Economic Activity Code

You’ll need to specify a 4-digit code representing your main economic activity. This can be found on the NACE website by searching for keywords related to your business (e.g., “retail trade”).

  1. Signature and Submission

Finally, sign the form digitally or print it out for a handwritten signature. Attach any required supporting documents, like proof of business registration (Gewerbeschein), and email the completed form to the provided address.

If you reside outside of Germany, the process is similar – you’ll just need to locate the customs website for your respective EU country and follow their specific instructions for EORI registration.

What to Do After Obtaining EORI Number

Once you have your EORI number, you’re all set to start importing goods into the EU through proper customs channels. Be sure to keep this number handy when dealing with customs brokers, freight forwarders, or other logistics providers handling your shipments.

You may also need to update your business information on Amazon’s seller central with the new EORI number, depending on your existing account settings.

Most importantly, continue to stay compliant with all customs regulations, tax obligations, and EU product compliance rules. Having an EORI number is just one piece of the puzzle – responsible economic operators ensure they follow the applicable laws to the letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need a separate EORI number for each EU country I import to?

No, you only need one EORI number that is valid across all 27 EU member states. Once obtained from the customs authority in your country of registration, the EORI number allows you to import goods into any EU nation using the same number.

  1. Can I use my personal tax identification number instead of applying for an EORI number?

No, a personal tax ID or VAT registration number is not a substitute for an EORI number when importing commercial goods into the EU. The EORI number is a distinct customs identification requirement for businesses engaged in international trade with the EU.

  1. How long does it take to get an approved EORI number after applying?

The processing time can vary, but most EORI number applications are approved within 5-10 business days by the issuing customs authority, provided all documentation is properly submitted. However, it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your first EU import shipment to avoid potential delays. Some countries may have shorter or longer processing windows.

Conclusion

For Amazon FBA sellers looking to tap into the massive European market, obtaining an EORI number is an essential first step.
